The Dress that Transform – Hussein Chalayan

In the future scenario we had created, it is a high technology and resource scarcity world. As we discussed in the studio, citizens are more aware of the Earth after the high pollution from fossil fuel. Resources are really limited by that time. Therefore, fashion have to be designed with more sustainability form. Garments are developed into a more functional, multi-purpose, weather proof, durable, recyclable, protective, self-cleaning and androgynous.

The Garments by that time are controlled by a garment generator that can change the silhouette of the garment. The fabrication can be thickening or thinning depended on the weather change. This fashion design feature one of a solution on the lack of resource in society. One garment can satisfy the human needs of clothing. There will be no more resource used and waste in producing different garment for different purpose. Fashion designer Hussein Chalayan has created garments that are multi-purpose and have a transformation feature.

Technology are often expressed in Chalayan’s fashion (Quinn 2003). He explored different material and fabrication used in fashion. He bring new view and feature into fashion. In Hussein Chalayan Spring/Summer 2007 collection., he created a avant garde collection that have a interesting feature.

In the video, it is a runway fashion show presenting Chalayan spring/summer 2007 collection. He has presented six looks [began at 2:30] that can transform without human assistance. The dress can be change into a different silhouette by the machine hidden inside the garment and control by computer system.

Chalayan had collaborated with the engineering and concept-creation firm, 2D3D, to generate the computer system (Ross 2006). They place battery pack, controlling chips, micro controllers and microswitches and little geared motors inside a container and place it onto the model’s buttock. There are many little tubes inside the garment with cables inside that do different work. They lifting or releasing stuff to create the transformation outside the garment (Rob 2006). These transformations are all done by the machine and does not need other helps.

It is an avant garde fashion design statement. It brings new feature into fashion. It is about exploring the boundary and a new way of material and technology used in fashion. In our future scenario, we believe this can be developed into a everyday based. It can become a transformation garment can become a more practical and functional garment. Rob Edkins (2006), director of 2D3D, has also common that it is vert possible in technical way that in there will be a garment that can be react to the weather change to protect us rather then we have to hand assistance in the future.

Chalayan had created a very interesting garment feature that can related into our future scenario. Our fashion culture will be really similar to a transformational dress. It will be a more piratical development with these Chanlyan’s dresses.
