Keeping Out?

Border is often use as a protection in many different culture and history. It is a symbol of defencing, protecting and privacy purpose (Mark 2009). It could be an architectural wall such as Great Wall of China and the Hadrian’s Wall, a barbed wire to keep people away or even the fences on your garden. It created a saver area inside the border.

In these sci-fi films that have a future scenario, I found that they have different use and design with the border.

Hunger Game is one of the most famous movie these day. It has a background story of twelve districts that provide product to the capital. The edge of each district has barbed wire to capture citizens inside. Citizen are not allow to go to other district. This act is for the capital to control citizens easily, which also make the disparity of wealth in the scenario. On the other hand, the capital is also surrounded by mountains, a geographical advantages that uses nature to be the border and protect themselves.

12 Monkeys is a 1995s film that create a scenario that human are almost wipes out by a virus. It forces people who survived have to move to underground. They creates border between them and the outside world to protect from the virus. This is a extreme example of human kind are force to live inside the border.

These movies creates different scenario of the possible use of border. Both of the borders have a common purpose of giving protection to the people inside. It reduces any chance to let people inside the border in danger. However, the character between these two films have a completely different life style. The people in the capital from Hunger Game are living in a luxury life style. They have no worry about the danger outside the border. On the other hand, the survivors from 12 Monkeys are forced to live inside a small space underground to avoid the virus. These are both possible scenario that can happen to people who stay inside the border.

Building border is also happened in contemporary world. In a recent interview of Donald Trump, Trump (2015) claimed that build a wall along the Southwest border can keep America away from any chances to be in danger. He describe that borders can protect America to be a saver place. However, it could be also a hugh chance of negative effect to the people inside the border that never be mention(Kohn 2015). It is not only about the bright side with zero danger inside the wall.

A border between countries is not a new concept, more than 45 walls and fences were built at the boundary (Markon 2015). If Trump’s wall is built, will it lead to a future that every national boundaries, even every cities or houses to have a border to protect themselves? And what will happen inside the border? Will it be healthy live in an utopia that created behind the wall?

You introduce some interesting examples, Elliot. The subjective nature of border control is something that you may want to explore further. By this I mean that those on the ‘inside’ may think that they are acting in good faith and for positive reasons, but from the perspective of those ‘outside the fences’ they may be considered evil and malicious. This is particularly evident in Trumps example of closing the borders, as this act, in my opinion, is highly racist and unnecessary.

Border control is such a sensitive topic as it involves so many social, cultural, political and economic issues, and therefore needs to be treated with upmost sensitivity and a multifaceted solution.
